What It Means to Stretch Your Relaxers?
The term “stretching relaxers,” is a term used by those who use relaxers to as a way to chemically straighten there hair. Relaxers permanently straightens curly/coily hair. This is an invertible process for those who want there hair straight without having to flat iron or hot comb there hair on an everyday basis.
“Stretching out relaxers” is the process of not relaxing as often as your use to. For example, for those who get there new growth relaxed every 8 weeks, they may choose to stretch there relaxers to 10 or 12 weeks. The choice of stretching out a relaxer may come because of several reasons such as damaged hair, a sensitive scalp that needs healing, to avoid overlapping relaxers, and promoting healthier, stronger hair.
Some benefits of stretching relaxers are:
- The ability to reduce the amount of chemicals applied to your hair and scalp on a yearly basis
- Saving Money
- Hopefully noticing healthier, thicker hair
When stretching your relaxer, it is important to be careful about how you stretch your relaxers. Your relaxed hair is much more fragile and weaker then the new growth which hasn’t been exposed to any chemicals. These two parts of the hair meet at what is called the “demarcation line.” This point of the hair is extremely fragile and if it is manipulated incorrectly can cause breakage. When relaxing, be sure to apply some type of conditioner or hair oil to the already relaxed hair, to avoid overlapping of your relaxers which again can cause breakage.
If you do not self relax, it is recommended that you seek a professional to relax your hair to avoid unrepairable damage.
